This spring I had the unique opportunity to serve as a Science Communication Fellow as part of The University of Minnesota’s College of Biological Sciences (CBS) Science Communication Lab’s efforts to bring more awareness to the importance of Science Communication as a field, and as a skill. As a fellow, I was able to contribute an original piece to the CBS’s increasingly popular BioLine blog. The BioLine blog is meant to be an outlet for students wanting to practice their science communication skills and share their science writing in an entertaining, untraditional way. I also attended a ‘creating a podcast’ workshop where we learned the ins and outs of podcasting, from audio recording and audio editing to interview writing in a way that pulls something fun and entertaining out of your guest. I put these new skills to the test by creating my very own podcast episode. Possibly the best part of the fellowship was co-facilitating the BioLine Bootcamp workshop that CBS puts on every semester. Students come to the bootcamp with a piece of writing in the works and together we turn their jargon filled draft into a science story. Through peer editing, tips on ways they can make their writing more inclusive and accessible, and storytelling strategies, our goal is to teach others how to communicate their science in a way that is inspiring, relatable, unique and makes their writing stand out! The fellowship allowed me to practice my own science communication skills, but also gave me the chance to take on leadership roles, be active in the university community, gain experience and meet new people with varying scientific interests.
